Giants reportedly working to finalize agreement to hire John Harbaugh as next head coach
The New York Giants are finalizing an agreement to make John Harbaugh their next head coach, according to multiple reports. A deal is expected barring any last-minute complications, which would mark a significant hire for the franchise following a disappointing 4-13 season.
The Pursuit and Negotiation
The Giants identified Harbaugh as their top target immediately after his departure from the Baltimore Ravens. The interest was mutual, with Harbaugh reportedly studying film of Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart early in the process. After an initial interview on Wednesday where the Giants made a "massive push," Harbaugh returned to Baltimore but remained engaged in contract discussions, indicating a strong mutual intent to finalize a deal.
Harbaugh’s Coaching Pedigree
Harbaugh, 63, spent 18 seasons as head coach of the Ravens, compiling a 180-113 regular-season record and leading the team to a Super Bowl XLVII victory. While his recent postseason record has been less successful (3-6 since 2014), his extensive experience and proven leadership made him the most coveted candidate on this year’s coaching market.
A Fresh Start for the Giants
The Giants have struggled since Tom Coughlin’s departure in 2016, cycling through multiple head coaches. The 2025 season was particularly challenging, marred by key injuries to wide receiver Malik Nabers, rookie running back Cam Skattebo, and multiple concussions for quarterback Jaxson Dart. Despite the setbacks, the offense showed statistical improvement, and the team holds the fifth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, offering Harbaugh immediate resources to rebuild.
If completed, the hire would reunite Harbaugh with the NFC East, where he began his NFL coaching career under Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles. Barring a Super Bowl meeting, his first matchup against his former Ravens team would not occur until the 2028 regular season.
