How Butch Harmon would ‘needle' Tiger Woods if he met with Charlie
Legendary golf instructor Butch Harmon, who guided Tiger Woods during eight of his 15 major championship victories, expressed keen interest in a potential session with Woods' 16-year-old son, Charlie.
While admitting he has never seen the younger Woods play, Harmon's curiosity is piqued. "I don't know if I'd take it on as a full-time [role]. I'd sure—my curiosity would make me damn sure do it one time just so I could see the kid," Harmon said during an appearance on SiriusXM's "Katrek & Maginnes On Tap."
Harmon stipulated one playful condition for such a meeting: Tiger Woods himself would need to be present. "Because we could have some fun with that," Harmon explained. "I'd like to needle Tiger and say, you know, when you were that young, you couldn't do it like he's doing it."
When asked how the elder Woods might respond to such a jab, Harmon humorously declined to elaborate, stating, "I can't say it on the phone."
Reflecting on his first encounter with a young Tiger in 1993, Harmon recalled the future legend's fearless and competitive nature. He described a confident teenager who, when asked about his preferred shot shape under pressure, replied, "I just hit it as hard as I can and go find it and hit it again."
Harmon underscored the intangible quality that defined Tiger's early dominance, noting his unprecedented run of six consecutive national titles. "In every one of those six finals, the match went to the last hole, and he won every single one of them," Harmon said. "This kid at a young age had the heart and soul to figure out 'I'm going to win.' ... And you can't teach that."
