Texas hands No. 10 Vanderbilt its first loss, shrinking count of D-I undefeateds to 3
The ranks of the unbeaten in Division I men's college basketball have shrunk to three after No. 10 Vanderbilt suffered its first loss of the season, an 80-64 defeat to unranked Texas on Wednesday.
The Final Unbeatens
With Vanderbilt's exit, the remaining undefeated teams are:
No. 1 Arizona
No. 8 Nebraska
Unranked Miami (Ohio)
This marks a rapid thinning of the group, which stood at six teams at the start of the week before losses by Michigan and Iowa State.
How Vanderbilt Lost Its Perfect Record
The Commodores (16-1, 3-1 SEC) were undone by Texas's dominance on the glass and their own cold shooting. The Longhorns secured a commanding 42-24 rebounding advantage, converting 11 offensive rebounds into second-chance points. Vanderbilt struggled offensively, shooting just 36.7% from the field and 36% from three-point range.
After a competitive first half, Texas closed the period on a 9-0 run to seize control and continued to pull away after halftime. Texas center Matas Vokietaitis led all scorers with 22 points, while guard Dailyn Swain added 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Texas Builds Momentum
The victory represents a significant step forward for Texas (11-6, 2-2 SEC), coming on the heels of a win over No. 18 Alabama last Saturday. After a challenging non-conference slate that included losses to Duke, UConn, and others, the Longhorns have reignited their season ahead of a key rivalry game against Texas A&M this weekend.
