NZ beat India to claim historic ODI series win
In a historic performance, New Zealand defeated India by 41 runs in a high-scoring thriller in Indore to secure a 2-1 ODI series victory—their first-ever bilateral ODI series win on Indian soil.
The foundation was laid by a monumental partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips. After being reduced to 58-3, the duo added 219 runs from just 188 deliveries. Mitchell powered his way to a career-best 137, while Phillips struck a crucial 106, propelling the Black Caps to a formidable total of 337-8.
India's chase was anchored by a record-extending 54th ODI century from Virat Kohli, who scored 124 from 108 balls. Support came from Harshit Rana (52), but the chase unraveled in the final overs. Seamer Zak Foulkes struck twice in two balls to remove Rana and Mohammed Siraj, and Mitchell took a vital catch at long-off to dismiss Kohli shortly after, effectively ending India's resistance.
The hosts were eventually bowled out for 296 in the 46th over, handing New Zealand a landmark victory. "It's an incredible feeling," said captain Michael Bracewell, who contributed an unbeaten 28. "The boys showed immense character."
The teams now shift focus to a five-match T20I series beginning January 21, a crucial preparation step ahead of the T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February.
