Yankees news: Peralta, Hoerner the gems of trade market speculation
While the Cody Bellinger rumors persist, the New York Yankees are actively exploring the trade market to address two critical needs: a top-of-the-rotation starter and middle-infield help. According to reports, the Yankees have a potential match with the Milwaukee Brewers for ace Freddy Peralta and are also showing interest in Chicago Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner.
The Brewers are known to be shopping Peralta, who is entering the final year of his contract. Milwaukee's desire for a major-league-ready pitching prospect aligns with the Yankees' depth, making players like Will Warren or Luis Gil potential centerpieces in a deal. Such a trade would give New York a frontline starter for 2026 while providing the Brewers with cost-controlled pitching for their future.
Hoerner as an Upgrade at Second Base
Similarly, the Cubs' signing of Alex Bregman could make Hoerner—also a pending free agent—expendable. The Yankees see the Gold Glove-caliber infielder as a clear offensive and defensive upgrade over Anthony Volpe, who struggled significantly at the plate in 2025. While Chicago is not actively shopping Hoerner, the right trade package could facilitate a move that immediately bolsters the Yankees' lineup and infield defense.
Spring Training Schedule Set; Tucker Pursuit Intensifies
Amid these trade explorations, the Yankees have finalized their spring training schedule. Pitchers and catchers are due in Tampa by February 11, with full-squad workouts beginning February 16. The exhibition slate opens on February 20 against the Baltimore Orioles.
On the free-agent front, the Yankees' "Plan B" for the outfield remains star slugger Kyle Tucker. However, they face stiff competition from the Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Mets, all of whom have recently met with Tucker. To secure his services, the Yankees may need to present a compelling long-term offer, as competitors could have an advantage if Tucker prefers a shorter-term deal to re-enter the market sooner.
