Meta faces China probe over acquisition of AI agent startup Manus
China's Ministry of Commerce announced Thursday it will launch an investigation into Meta's recent acquisition of Singapore-based artificial intelligence startup Manus. The probe will assess the deal's compliance with Chinese laws regarding export controls, technology import and export, and overseas investment.
The acquisition, valued at over $2 billion according to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, is part of Meta's strategy to integrate advanced automation into its consumer and enterprise products. While the Chinese government stated it supports lawful transnational operations and international tech cooperation, the investigation signals heightened scrutiny of major foreign technology deals that may intersect with its regulatory framework.
The move underscores the complex geopolitical landscape facing global tech giants as they pursue strategic acquisitions. The outcome of the assessment could influence the pace and structure of future cross-border technology mergers involving companies with operations or supply chains linked to China.
